How To Protect Yourself From Negativity

Over the past few months I’ve noticed an increase in clients complaining about being exposed to and effected by negative energies.

Protect yourself from negative energies, reiki of greater boston, waltham

Here are some common symptoms related to this issue:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling ‘off’
  • Shallow or Difficult Breathing
  • Sleeplessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • More susceptible to illness
  • Hypersensitivity to sensations (light, noise, touch, etc.)
  • Restlessness
  • Anger
  • Complaining often

More severe symptoms are:

  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Memory Loss
  • Word Mix Ups

The source of these negative vibes can be varied. You may not even know where they’re coming from but the most common sources are other people! Bosses and family members are top on the list. Friends and co-workers are next. It could also be a bad energy imprint left by someone or something who was in the space you live, work or drive in. Less common, we find that there is someone or an entity putting a curse around you and/or sending you negative thoughts/energy. Constant exposure to technology like phones and computers can contribute to a congested/negative sense of space also as can TV.

Whatever the source, there are time proven ways to ward off this negative energy. Here are some favorite, simple but effective methods to stay whole and centered amid these negative vibes as  well as to banish them:

  • Grounding

Spring is an easy season for most people to start grounding. It’s easy. Just increase your time outdoors! Hug trees, walk barefoot on grass or sand (any natural substance), walk in the woods, commune with some wild animals and talk with some boulders! See how you feel after a full dose of those activities.  Here are some other ways to ground including crystal healing, yoga poses and essential oil use.

  • Incense/Sage

Saging your space is called Smudging. The most commonly used herb is white sage but you can use whatever is appealing to you. Palo Santo is also popular. Play around with some different incense fragrances and see what works best in making you feel clear, pure and happy.  My personal favorite is Sandalwood. In addition to treating your spaces I like to sage/incense my own body as well. Ahhh. Feels good.

  • Bells/Sounds

    Tingsha Tibetan Bells

Completing a sound clearing is quick and easy. Get a hold of some bells, a Tibetan Bowl or just a crystal and a tuning fork and make some noise all around your space and your body. Be gone all unwanted and unhelpful presences!

  • Crystals

Place Selenite Wands in each corner of an impure space.

Selenite, Smokey Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli are some favorites. When I know I’m going to be dealing with difficult people or people who push my buttons I load myself up with Black Tourmaline in the form of jewelry and also pop some loose crystals in my bra. Over the years this has kept me grounded and less reactive as well as protected so that my energy does not get sapped. I am most grateful for this stone’s protection.

  • Visualization

Sit or lie in a quiet place and take a few deep breaths relaxing your body and mind. Choose a color that you like and/or one that makes you feel safe and protected. It is common to use a clear white or cobalt blue but one of your preference will be best. I am partial to a deep forest green or rich brown for a protective shield! Begin now to see yourself surrounded by a circle or oval of your chosen color. Stay there inside this bubble for 5 minutes or so. You can make the shield hard or soft, moving or stationary. You may be moved to say a prayer or sing. Listen to your higher knowledge as to how to travel through and to end your visualization. Through your day whenever feeling low vibrational energies reignite that color bubble. You can find some guided protective visualizations on line if doing this on your own is too overwhelming.

  • Say No

Yes, just saying, ‘no’ to things/people that give you anxiety or push your buttons can help to keep your energy vibrations clear and high. Like everything else, this gets easier with practice so get started.

  • Plants

Some easy to grow and fairly inexpensive suggestions are: Rosemary, Aloe Vera and Peace Lily. These will all help clear your space and discourage low vibrations from sticking around.

  • Salt

Put a few bowls of sea salt around the space you’d like to clear, use some epsom salts in your bath and/or use a salt lamp.

  • High Frequency Music

You can find others on line.  Using  high frequency music  can  also  help  to  clear  your  space.   Here is one example.

  • Holy Water or Water Infused with Reiki Energy

Sprinkle or spritz it all over your space. I also like to spray it above and in front of me and walk through the mist. Ahh so cleansing and refreshing!

  • Reiki Healing

Come on in for a Reiki Healing. In our session I will use several of the above methods for clearing your physical and energetic body from sapping energies: Smudging, Bells, Essential Oils, Music, Crystals and of course Reiki itself. Recipients report feeling lighter, relaxed, chill, grounded, clear and focused.

One more tip before I leave you to get yourself and your spaces clean. You can carry out these techniques just as they are listed or, if you feel connected to a higher power like God, Angels, Saints, Spirits (maybe a loved one who has passed) or an overall energy source, you may ask for their assistance in your clearing efforts.

Blessings.

Beat The Blues (Quickly!)

6 ways to beat the blues

Autumn. It’s the time of year I begin to feel that old familiar melancholy come upon me. It feels  like a film of some sort comes between me and the vibrancy of life. Ugh! What I do as soon as I feel this sense of doom is panic because I know where this can lead. It can take me deep down into the dark rabbit hole of depression and and that is scary!  Scrambling to head this off I:

  1. Stand on my head. For at least 5 minutes/day, more if possible. Any inversion where your head is below your heart is helpful. Handstand, Downward Facing Dog, Tri-pod, Standing Forward Bend. Inversions are shown to improve brain function, release neurotransmitters, balance hormones, and release endorphins.
  2. Practice Breath of Joy 5-10 rounds/day. The strong inhalations and synchronized arm movements, awakens your entire system increasing oxygen levels in the bloodstream, temporarily stimulating the sympathetic nervous system, circulating more prana (energy).  Here’s an example to watch if you’re not familiar with this breath.
  3. Pamper myself. I immediately schedule Massages, Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Restorative Yoga Classes, etc. For you the pampering may look different but whatever it is that calms you and makes you feel cared for or joyful, do it at least 1x/week. If the items I mentioned are too expensive you can find Groupons or engage in less pricey activities like seeing a movie or take a Bubble Bath. Today I took myself to the zoo because animals make me happy! I used a Library pass and it only cost me $9.00 for 2 hours of pleasure..

This Black Handed Spider Monkey was in love with me. He was showing of his aerial skills and would cry every time I said Good Bye and pretended to leave.
  4. Increase aerobic activity. More days of Elliptical or TreadMill and HIIT and less of Weight Training and Stretching. This activity releases endorphins and other natural brain chemicals that can enhance mood and energy.
  5. Increase Omega 3 ingestion in the form of supplements (Fish Oil) and foods like Wild Caught Salmon.  Increasing omega 3’s has direct effects on serotonin levels.
  6. Take or Increase St. John’s Wart or anti-depressant meds (if you’re on them and with the approval of your physician of course) which effect serotonin and dopamine levels.
6 ways to beat the blues
My Depression Personified

If I catch this gloomy, blue feeling soon enough these 6 actions usually take me back to equilibrium within 2 weeks. I  have come to terms with the fact that sadness is a perpetual companion of mine. Sometimes he stays in the shadows and other times he is a ferocious beast taunting me.  So if you haven’t yet, try ‘making friends’ with this melancholy creature.  I talk to him, tell him, “Oh hello again. I know you’re about to visit me  and it’s ok. I’m sure you will teach me something new about myself and my purpose here on earth so thank you ahead of time. Let’s go!”

Me? Meditate? I Don’t Think so!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston, waltham

Most people come into my office for services because they are feeling ‘off’ in some way and know they can be better. A majority are stressed and anxious, have trouble sleeping, etc. but when I ask them if they’ve tried meditation this is how they look at me!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston, waltham
Me? Meditate? I Don’t Think So!

Meditation gets a bad rap in some circles with people believing that sitting still in lotus pose like a Buddha is a requirement. I used to think that too and being a fairly active person with a penchant for large muscle movement, this pose did not appeal to me either but this notion is quite far from the truth. There are many different and fun ways to meditate and still reap the benefits!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham

Some of The Benefits of Meditation

  • Increases immune function
  • Decreases Pain
  • Decreases Inflammation at the Cellular Level
  • Increases HappinessDecreases Depression
  • Decreases Anxiety
  • Decreases Stress
  • Increases your sense of connection to others
  • Increases compassion
  • Decreases feelings of loneliness
  • Increases ability to control emotions
  • Increases grey matter (memory) and cortical thickness (attention span)
  • Improves productivity and creativity
  • Improves ability to sleep
  • Decreases need for sleep
  • Improves perspective
  • Improves ability to express your authentic self
  • Decreases drama in your life

Despite all these life improving benefits, people come up with excuses,  fears and reasons not to participate in meditation.

Some Common Reasons People Give for Why They ‘Can’t’ Meditate

  1. I can’t sit still
  2. I can’t clear my mindMeditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
  3. I don’t have time
  4. I don’t have a quiet place
  5. Quiet makes me anxious
  6. It’s boring

Addressing each of the above:

  1. There is no need to sit still to meditate. There are many meditation methods that involve movement/activity. Try Walking Meditation, Vinyasa (Flow)Yoga, Tea Ceremony Meditation, Chanting.
  2. Even master meditators have trouble clearing their minds sometimes. Having a clear mind is not a requirement for meditation. In fact I welcome the distracting thoughts because they give me an opportunity to practice placing my focus back on what I’m doing. Meditational focal points could be the breath, a mantra, a candle flame, etc. This is the practice – noticing the unclear mind and bringing your focus back to attention, over and over. Meditation is practice not perfection. (The practice of meditation is perfection though!)
  3. No time? Nonsense!

    Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
    NO Time? Nonsense!
  4. You don’t have to meditate for long periods to reap the rewards. To beginners I recommend 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night. 10 minutes a day. I know you have that available to you and if you cannot make that time for your sanity and improved quality of life then you are not quite ready to progress in this area of your life. At this time, there is something about being unsettled/unhealthy that is more compelling to you than grounded living. This is ok! We are all at different places in our journeys.  Clients who give the reason of no time for meditation seem to find meditating while lying down in bed just before sleep at night and/or before they get up in the morning an easy way to ease into it all.You may not be able to get a quiet place to meditate at home because you live with noisy people or people who demand your attention. Look elsewhere. Perhaps there is a place outside somewhere, in a park or your backyard that will offer more peace for you. Maybe at work there is a place you can go to at lunch break – an empty office? Eventually you will not need pure quiet to meditate. Being able to achieve calm among the noise is the ultimate goal so practicing with a bit of a ruckus can be beneficial.Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
  5. Uncomfortable with quiet? See #4.
  6. With so many meditation methods there is bound to be at least one that will pique and keep your interest!

I believe beneath these excuses is a fear of discovering deep truths. This fear is usually not conscious. It can be scary looking in the mirror of your mind but it is the only way to move beyond the crap on a more permanent basis.

Consistency is key. I find 5 minutes a day better than 30 minutes once a week. You may not notice the benefit immediately (but you may!), either way, if you continue, you will  notice how strong, grounded, calm, level-headed, compassionate, etc. you’ve become and you will need to go buy and wear a shirt that says, ‘SPIRITUAL WARRIOR!’

There are too many types of meditation to list here but here are:

Some of the More Popular Meditation Methods

  • Walking– Just walk and pay attention. Walk slow, walk fast, feel your feet. Notice.
  • Metta Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamMetta (Loving Kindness)-I love this one because I get to send myself some love first! Use loving statements starting with yourself as recipient. 1. May I be/feel: “fill in the blank”: happy, loved, peaceful, etc. 2. Next think of some one you like or are thankful for use the same statement with them in mind: May they be “fill in the blank”. 3. Someone you feel neutral about. 4. Someone who pushes your buttons, disturbs your peace. 5. All beings/The Universe/The Earth.
  • Mantra– You can use traditional Mantras like ‘Sat Nam’ or I am Truth. I like “I am Light’ and here’s a beautiful song about that for you to enjoy and absorb. You can also make up your own Mantra that means something to you like: My heart is open and free or I am One with All.
  • Sound-Do this lying down or seated. Allow all sounds to enter your awareness and let them be.
  • Guided/Visualization-Use a meditation app like Head Space or Insight Timer. Candle Flame Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamCandle Flame– Soften your gaze and focus on a candle flame. You may receive messages or see images as time passes. Bring your focus back to the flame over and over again as you notice your mind wandering.
  • Mindfulness-In short, become aware of each movement, sound, thought, etc. Watch all as the observer.
  • Chanting- Chant along with some traditional sanskrit prayers. Here’s an example. It’s ok if you mess up the words just feel it all and open your throat.
  • Breathwork-Simply watch your breath come in and out (without losing focus on the breath). It’s harder than it sounds. You can also find a breathing pattern that feels good to you. Square breathing, for example, is a basic breathing technique that is not too difficult to work with.
  • Journaling-Write anything! Your dreams, your thoughts, ideas, disturbances, things that you’re grateful for, goals, feelings. Have fun! Always have fun.Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamEngaging in an activity that absorbs you: working on a puzzle, a math problem, dancing, singing any art form or creative practice. Merge and become one with the activity.

C’mon now! Pick one and just give it a try for me. For yourself! If you’d like a little bit of guidance book a private session with me (it’s the 8th option down on that link) and you’ll be on your way in no time.

World Mental Health Day; We’re All Crazy If You Ask Me

Mental Health Healing, Reiki of Greater Boston

I was remiss in not acknowledging World Mental Health Day this past Tuesday, October 10th especially since some of my favorite peeps are living with Mental Health issues!

World Mental Health Day, October 10, Reiki of Greater Boston
This day was established by the World Health Organization 25 years ago in order to promote awareness of this issue.

I’m not big on labels. I know I’m not suppose to use the word ‘crazy’ but I’m very close to this community if not part of it and they know I mean no disrespect. People are sometimes labeled ‘crazy’ or ‘Mentally Ill’ just because they don’t follow expectations of society. That is just pure nonsense!

Really, who’s to say who is Mentally Ill or Mentally Healthy? I was providing Reiki on a Locked Psychiatric Floor today. One of the patients said to me, “Oh you’re so beautiful but you need a better hairdresser to make you even more beautiful!” Ha ha! This statement would not be acceptable in the workplace but Does speaking the truth make you ill? If we all told and lived our truths a bit more, less of us would be unable to cope. I told her I would look into a new stylist and that her I loved her for the compliment and then gave her a big hug.

Another patient told me about some visions he was having of Jesus and energy exchanges and one other said he was my uncle Rob reincarnated. I don’t dismiss either of these statements quickly. Some of most brilliant, sensitive and highly evolved people in the world (and the next) believe and have experienced Jesus, energy visions and reincarnation memories. Yet these people I meet with are in the hospital needing care both medicinal and psychiatric because they are out of balance and their state of mind has too much control over their behaviors which are not able to be absorbed in the community. This imbalance does not allow them to be the best that they can be in this world and that is when intervention is needed.

Mental Health Healing, Reiki of Greater Boston

If you think you are immune to Mental Health Issues think again. Really. Think again. I was that person once upon a time. I thought there was a big division between ‘us and them’ and then- bam -just like that it hit me. Down, down, down the deep, dark rabbit hole I went. Even now if I am not fastidious about my spiritual practices  and vigilant about using only organic products I start sinking. The trick is to be hyper-aware of your feelings and state of mind so that any little imbalance or discomfort alerts you to take healing action whatever that may be for you. These healing modalities vary for each person. For some, medication is needed, others need more sleep, some meditation, an outing with friends, etc. The healing options are endless. Sometimes we are tempted to wait this imbalance/discomfort out thinking and hoping and praying that it will go away but if you have a chronic issue it is not likely to go away and delaying treatment is not a good idea. Don’t wait until you are in the depths of despair or at the height of a manic episode to reach for help.

People wait and are reluctant to discuss their experiences with Mental Illness because there is a stigma to it still in some circles. This is what comes to mind for some people when they hear someone is struggling with Mental Illnesses like OCD, anxiety, Bi-Polar, etc.

The reality of this image does exist but it is extreme. More often it is the face of me or you, of your mother, friend or spouse struggling in some way, still functioning but not optimally.

Everyday I work with clients who are struggling with Mental Health Issues. I salute them for knowing that they need to address the problems, for admitting that they need help, for being brave enough for reaching out and dragging themselves into my office week after week to work on themselves in order to be the best that they can be.

All the services I provide help people (including myself) work on becoming the best possible version of themselves. Yoga, Meditation, Life Coaching, Reiki, Crystal Healing, a combination of aforementioned plus education via reading and journaling are all a part of the health journey that I have found lifesaving.

Of course I am not claiming that these things alone will necessarily eradicate mental illness although it does happen. (See this movie documentary if you can: Heal to see just how powerful the mind and alternative health  methods are in improving our minds and bodies.) Some advanced and deeply rooted issues need medical and medicinal interventions but all these Alternative Health Services are a great support for the person suffering and will give them a chance to take some control in their own healing process. It is important that we not give control of our healing away to anyone. The patient knows, deep down – sometimes way deep down – what they need and certainly they should play a part in their own healing.

That is one major goal I have with all of my clients – to get them to touch their own inner knowledge, their higher knowledge, their intuition. Through all of these methods and practices we move closer to that higher power we all possess but have let go amidst the craziness and conditioning of the world.

According to the World Health Organization, NIMH and APA these are recent statistics on this issue:

  • 1 in 5 (or 43.8 million) adults experience mental illness in a given year.
  • 1 in 25 (or 10 million) adults experience a serious mental illness.
  • 1 in 100 (or 2.4 million) live with schizophrenia.
  • 2.6% (or 6.1 million) of Americans have bipolar disorder.
  • 6.9% (or 16 million) suffer from severe depression.
  • 18.1% (or 42 million) live with an anxiety disorder.

Mental Health is clearly a major issue which won’t be fixed quickly or easily but we can do our little part by making ourselves aware of the prevalence of Mental Illness and encouraging people suffering with it at whatever level to talk about it without shame, to reach out for help and to have hope for healing.

Romantic and Healthy Valentine Dessert

Romantic and Healthy Valentine Dessert, Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham
Romantic and Healthy Valentine Dessert, Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Get your fruits! Strawberries dipped in Chocolate! How romantic and a perfect way to get your dose of fruits in on Valentine’s Day.

Most fruits including strawberries offer:

  • Fiber (Helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease, reduce constipation and diverticulosis, reduce the risk obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
  • Vitamin A (Supports the immune system, skin health, cell growth, bone growth, reproduction and good vision.)
Vitamin C (Strawberries have more vitamin C per ounce than citrus fruits! Vitamin C is important for growth and repair of all body tissues, helps heal cuts and wounds, and keeps teeth and gums healthy.
  • Folic Acid/Folate (DNA synthesis and repair)
  • Low Calorie
  • Low Fat
  • Low Sodium
  • No cholesterol

Change it up and try Apricots dipped in Chocolate to get a dose of Potassium as well. Diets rich in potassium help to maintain healthy blood pressure and bone mass and reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.

Now add a bit of dark chocolate and you get:
More antioxidants through flavonoids (reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack) Chocolate is also rich in minerals, including calcium, iron, zinc and potassium and vitamin E, vitamin A and B vitamins.
And, as you may have heard, Chocolate sends pleasure signals to the brain that will help with any Winter Blues and may put you in an amorous state. Perfect!

Easy and Natural Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

How to beat the winter blues. Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham ,MA

How to beat the winter blues. Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham ,MA

Can you stand on your head or do a handstand?! If so do this daily for at least 3 minutes, or more if possible. This, for me has been the most effective method for banishing the blues.

Try using a wall for support on your back.
If these poses are not accessible to you then try a modified inversion such as Downward Dog or Forward Fold.

The Breath of Joy will also give you an energy boost.

Eat more fruits and veggies.

The sun may not feel warm in winter’s colder climates but it will provide you with the needed vitamin D. Get outside! You may also want to addVitamin D supplements.

Eat more fatty fish like Salmon, Lake Trout, Mackerel. If you are not a fish eater simply take a fish oil supplement.

Listen to music that makes you happy! Here’s one of my favorites. Maybe even dance to the beat!

Get some exercise every day. You don’t need to make it into a big thing – simply take a walk or do a few jumping jacks. Anything! Just Move! If you do belong to a gym then use it.

Have a few Reiki sessions to get your energy balanced and your body in the best state to start healing itself.

Try wearing some joy making crystals like Carnelian, Lithium Quartz, Bloodstone, Rose Quartz.

If these methods do not make a difference in your mood please do not hesitate to call a professional! You are not alone in sadness/depression and it is nothing to be ashamed about. You cannot achieve your purpose on earth when you live in sadness so help the world out and get yourself in peak emotional condition.
