Fun With The Full Moon!

Growing up I paid no mind to the moon. I did not feel its pull or calling. I think I was too busy being in love with the sun (needed that tan you know!) which makes sense since it represents ego and the material world. Fast forward many (unnumbered) years and now I am in love with the moon too!

I know there is some scientific explanation for the full moon phase and its position in the solar system but I don’t really give a care about that. To me the Full Moon is a time of amplification of feelings and sensuality, a time to find and express your true essence. To wit it is the perfect time for following your bliss!

Charge Crystals

If you use Crystals (and I highly recommend that you do!) then this is a perfect time to cleanse and refresh them through the natural lunar energy. Simply put them either on a window sill receiving the moon’s light or even better place them outside in direct rays overnight. Be sure to collect them in the morning before the sun gets too powerful because the sun’s rays will sap the life out of them.

Cleanse Yourself and Your Space

Declutter your physical space by ridding yourself of junk and/or things you haven’t worn or used in 6 months or more. Donate these items to a charity for added benefit. Declutter your energetic space by burning some incense or sage in your home, workspace, car, etc., take an epsom salt bath, ring some bells/chimes in your spaces and absorb the sound. Consider also completing a food fast and or doing a detox for the day or week of the full moon.

Meditate

If you’re new to meditation see this. Choose one type of meditation and bring it outside under the full moon. You can simply inhale the moon’s energy and let it warm you and open your heart and as you exhale connect yourself further to the earth. If it’s warm where you are, sitting on the ground is ideal or if you’re doing walking meditation walk barefoot!  If it’s wintery weather maybe sit inside at a window with moon light streaming in or do a more active meditation outside like Breath of Joy.

Dance

Dance to your choice of music (Classic Moon Tunes:  Cat Steven’s Moon Shadow or Neil Young’s Harvest Moon or Van Morrison’s Dancing in the Moonlight, Bad Moon Rising by CCR) Whatever moves you will do. Consider also dancing to night’s nature sounds: the crackle of leaves and branches , the hoot of owls, howl of coyotes or even silence. Move freely, let go and be wild! Another option if it’s warm is to dance naked. There’s really nothing more free feeling than this! Finally ‘dancing’ with a friend amorously under the full moon is exquisite.

Let Go

Forgive yourself and forgive others. Write down on a paper something you feel guilty for or some anger or grudge you hold. Hold those feelings for a moment and ask the moon to help you release and let go these feelings/situations that are not serving you. Burn the paper in a fire and as you watch it burn say goodbye to these unhelpful feelings. Let them transmute into ash. One other thing I like to do after this is to Howl at the Moon! Try it! When I do my howling I am thanking the moon and other forces for assisting me in moving forward and/or I am releasing more of the feelings I just burned.

The Full Moon phase is a perfect time to pray for others and send them good wishes and vibrations. Metta Meditation (Loving Kindness) is my go to for this but you can do your own method of Love sending. Metta:  Start by sending the Love to yourself first –

May I dwell in safety.
May I be happy and healthy.
May I be at peace.

Move on then to someone you love and send this prayer to them using their name – May “name” dwell in safety, etc. Next send it to someone who pushes your buttons! And finally send the prayer to all human beings or all sentient beings whichever seems right for you.

Intentionally Absorb the Lunar Energy

Simply sit directly under the moon and absorb whatever it is sending you. It is helpful to be in a calm state to absorb this energy so perhaps take a few deep breaths or a few minutes watching your breath and then communicate with Mother Moon in whatever way that feels right for you. Stay open!

Make a Wish or Set Intentions

Write your wish or intention on a piece of paper and put it in a small wish jar. I like to use clear glass. Set the jar out in the moonlight and let the moon do its magic. Take the jar in in the morning and put it away until the next full moon when you can revisit your original wish/intention and note any progress. Re-do it if necessary.

Take a Moon Bath

You can just bathe in the moon rays either clothed or naked or actually take a bath with water and moon rays. For this you can use a sprinkler, hose or my favorite – a kiddie pool! So fun and purifying. Get clean!

Invent Your Own Full Moon Ceremony

Get creative! Listen to your gut and go with it. Each time I do my own ceremony I add something new as the spirit moves me. Think about banging a drum or other percussion instrument, dance, yell, use fire, do yoga, sleep outside, etc.

How We Are Unknowingly Poisoning Ourselves

Carcinogens and other poisonous chemicals are hiding in the most beautiful places. I am not an alarmist but I do want to communicate some important health information.

I assume that people know these things but almost daily I am proved wrong on this front. Just this week I tried out a new ‘Boutique Style’ Gym which is quite gorgeous (and expensive!) and within 5 minutes of the class my eyes were watering, my throat was scratchy, my nose was stuffed and I had a headache. Needless to say I could not concentrate on my ab crunches or tightening my butt! As I looked around for the source of the agitation, I saw a lovely lavender colored plug-in air freshener. Are you kidding me? This room is about 10×7 ft. in area with no open windows and 5+ students sweating in there. Shouldn’t owners/managers of ‘health’ entities be aware of these basics? Yes, but they’re not so we’ve got to be vigilant in controlling our own environments.

Do you know what is in the air fresheners, candles, perfume, cleaning products, disinfectant wipes you are using? Please take a close look! Because I have some Autoimmune issues I am hyper-sensitive to these poisonous, synthetic scents and products otherwise I would be obliviously spraying and wiping along with the rest of humanity!  If exposed too long, I will begin to display symptoms of illness: sore throat, hives, tics, shaking, muscle fatigue, general fatigue, malaise, etc. It seem that this sensitivity turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

Though you may not have obvious reactions to these chemical odors, it does not mean that they are not effecting you in a negative way.  I do not profess to be a  scientist and I don’t pretend to know all of the chemical compounds that make up these poisonous products but I’ll give you the basics and you can do your own research if you want more scientific details.

Some toxic ingredients in air fresheners are:

  • formaldehyde
  • petroleum distillates
  • dichlorobenzene
  • aerosol propellants
  • phthalates

Bottomline? These are Neurotoxins messing with your brain/nervous system as well as your reproductive system. I have quite a number of clients with fertility issues coming in for Reiki Healing and Relaxation Techniques. No amount of these healing sessions will be beneficial long term if people are going home to physically toxic environments. 

Healthier Fragrance Alternatives

There are plenty of safe, natural products that you can use that will not be detrimental to your health so please dispose of the poisons.

Here are some healthier ideas:

  • Soy Candles fragranced with essential oils
  • Beeswax Candles
  • Diffusers with essential oils
  • Incense
  • Sage
  • Palo Alto
  • Open the windows and let some fresh air in!
  • Add plants that absorb air pollutants: Philodendron, English ivy, spider plant, peace lily, snake plant, gerber daisies, pot mums and bamboo palm.

Just because it says ‘green’ on the label does not mean it is free of toxins. You’ve got to read the label unless you’re going with a well-known Green brand. Even then, check it out yourself. Please clean up your act! Protect your health and the health of our earth!

Got Carbohydrate Cravings? Squelch ‘Em!

Ooh. Don’t you hate me for posting these tempting pictures?! They’re even making me drool and I’ve been off carbs for years now. For a good part of my young adult/adult life I had intense cravings for chocolate. At some point it was totally out of control and very unhealthy so I decided to take control. You can do the same for your carb cravings! I researched, experimented and voila’ I have been craving free for 10 years! Taking Magnesium supplements was the key for me. Before you try any of the following remedies you will of course want to run it by your Doctor and make sure you are clear of more serious conditions that can also cause cravings such as hormone imbalances, hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc.

Proven Natural Remedies that Cut Carb Cravings

The Following are some natural remedies that have worked to diminish or eliminate carbohydrate cravings for me & my clients.

I recommend trying 1 at a time for at least a 2 week duration so that you will know what is working for you. (An aside: If you get bored, or frustrated experimenting with these supplements I’d say perhaps you are not quite ready for this path. Trying one of the Life Style options below may be more tolerable for you at this point.)

  1. Chromium – 600 micrograms/day
  2. Vitamin B Complex -Follow Directions from Manufacturer
  3. Magnesium – 200-300 mg/day
  4. Omega 3 – 500 mg/day
  5. Vitamin D -Follow Directions from Manufacturer
  6. Resveratrol – 100mg/day
  7. Co-Enzyme Q 10 – 100-300mg/day

Other Possible Remedies

I’m hopeful that  you will have success with the above suggestions but here are some other supplements you might look into if the above did not help you demolish the cravings demon. I have not personally worked with these but as I read about remedies that help this issue these come up repeatedly:

  • 5-Htp
  • Tryptophan
  • Glutamine
  • Lipase

Life Style Can Help Cut Cravings

In addition to trying some of these supplements it is always a good idea to do a food intake cleanse before you begin a new regime. Spring is the perfect time to try one. See this article for cleansing suggestions/information.

Employing the following Life Style choices with the supplements will support your goal to squelch the cravings:

  • Eat ‘clean’ whole foods (organic if possible): fruits, veggies, lean proteins, legumes, certain grains .
  • Exercise regularly in whatever form moves you. (pun intended).
  • Get as much sleep/rest as you can. Read here for tips to better sleep.
  • Manage stress by utilizing mind-body techniques: Reiki, Yoga, Breathing Exercises.
  • Purchase and use/wear Amethyst Crystal which helps with all addictions. (If your cravings stem from a broken heart, low self-esteem, etc. then I will recommend a different set of crystals and oils combination.)
  • Try Aromatherapy with Essential Oils Peppermint and/or Bergamot. 
  • One final thing to consider is, “What are these cravings trying to say to you?” If they stem from emotional issues in addition to chemical issues then these cravings may subside with the above attention but may get transferred over to another type of addiction. It can get complicated so it is helpful to be aware and in touch with possible emotional causes.

As with every other goal you work toward in your life, you must truly be ready and open to change and be dedicated to the journey despite the possibly bumpy road. 17 Ways To Invite Peace Into Your Home

How do you feel when you’re in your home environment? Reiki Clients come into my office for many reasons but one common denominator is stress reduction! We work together for an hour or 2 and they are feeling ‘blissed out’ when they leave. That feeling can last hours, days or longer but if you go home to a space that is toxic in some way you will not have a chance at maintaining that inner peace.

It’s not about how large or posh your living space is but how high the energy vibration is. I understand this term ‘energy vibration’ is elusive and vague to some of you but it is most definitely real. You clearly feel the difference in the office atmosphere when the boss walks in, and think about the feel of the beach air vs. basement atmosphere. You get the point. Our environment effects us in many ways and there are easy ways to transform your home space to support your quest for calm and peace. Here are some of my top suggestions that clients tell me have made a difference and that I personally have positive experience with.

1.  Open Windows

At least 10 minutes/day.

2.  De-Clutter

Clutter effects our brains and our overall health. Dust and mold collect on this clutter and more symbolically it mirrors your inner workings! You don’t have to clear the whole house (although that may be a nice long-term goal for you) but at least have a small area that is free of debris! If you are a pack-rat or hoarder come in for a Reiki series and we will use Malachite to facilitate clearing and letting go.

3.  Add Flowers/Plants peace_lily

Top choices for cleansing are: English Ivy, Peace Lily, Florists’ Chrysanthemum, Variegated Snake Plant. All of these absorb toxins but any plant or flower will soothe your eyes, heart and soul so choose your favorites!

4.  Add Art Work/Inspiration

Hang some things that inspire you or make you feel good. This can be in the form of quotes or images or something else more personal to you that reminds you of someone special and/or of the specialness of yourself.

5.  Burn Incense

Take your pick. Any one will do. My personal favorite is Sandalwood – Very earthy.

6.  Light Sage or Palo Santo

Sage. It is easy to grow your own in summer, dry it, bundle it and then burn away.

Palo Santo or “Holy Stick” is a natural wood aromatic incense used for centuries by the Incas and indigenous people of the Andes as a spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing, as well as to get rid of evil spirits and misfortune. as well as for medicinal purposes.

 7.  Crystals_seleniterods_massive

For clearing the air toward tranquility my suggestion is Selenite. Place many wands of this crystal all around your home or quiet space. These gems do not need to be cleansed.

8.  Use Diffuser

Fill it with your choice of essential oils and enjoy how the natural fragrance alters the mood in the room.

9.  Candles

Use one or many to alter the mood of a room and clear stagnating air.

10.  No Synthetic Fragrancesperfume

Yep. Poison.They effect hormone function, reduce sperm count, have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, Autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders.

11.  No Cigarette/Cigar Smoke

I do not even know what to say about this. They are clearly poisonous. Just don’t! And if you must, take it outside and protect the air inside your home.

12.  Clear Relationship

This is not always possible, I am aware, but do your best because this discord can effect us negatively deep down to a cellular level. Sometimes when my housemate (who happens to be my husband) is misbehaving I tell him I must clear his aura and then I go all around him clinging my tuning fork against a clear quartz crystal. Ahhhh. Much better.

13.  Tibetan Salt Lamps

Oh so pretty and reduces negative ions. Read here for more information.

14.  Burden BasketBurden Basket

Hang or place a basket of some sore outside your home or just outside your own personal quiet area to remind you of issues you want to leave out side. You can even write these issues down on a square of paper and put it in the basket prior to entering the space.  Let them go. Release your burdens!

15.  No Shoes

This is self explanatory. Take off your shoes before entering your main living area leaving the physical poisons outside and symbolically leaving all the worldly stresses out there as well.

16.  Altar

This does not have to be a traditional altar but just a little placemat, table or rug where you can place items that will assist you in gaining peace and clarity some of which have been listed above.

17.  Sound

Add some of these sound options to bring an air of peace to your space:music

  •  Wind Chimes
  •  Tuning Fork- Chime against a Clear Quartz Crystal
  •  Tibetan Singing Bowl
  •  Bells
  • Music-Here’s a sample track of peace inducing music. Certainly some part of it will please you. You can find more on You Tube by searching peaceful music or music for relaxation, etc.

Why not try one or 2 of these ideas and see if they support your goal for experiencing calm? They are not too expensive, are easy to find/do and we all know that you are worth the effort!

I’ve been noticing these mystical lamps for many years. I always knew they were special and I was drawn to them as they seemed to emit a calming quality – kind of like candlelight on steroids. It turns out that my senses were right!

Walk Softly On The Earth

Tomorrow, April 22, is Earth Day, the perfect day to think about how we can walk softly on the earth.

Here are some of my favorites:

Recycle   Cloud-1-Earth-Day

Most of us recycle now, 46 years after the initiation of this holiday. It is slow going but it’s progress. I am pretty good about doing this but I could improve. Cans, bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard-done. This year I will recycle more of my personal care product containers. How ’bout you?

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Cleaner, more beautiful, sustainable world for you and future generations.

Personal Disadvantages: 

  • Use of a few extra minutes/day week to sort/organize/dispose of.

Choose Personal Care Products Wisely

Use organic and all natural. Here are some brands to check out:

  • A healthier, cleaner body inside and out for you and your family.

Garden/Landscaping

Plant Trees!

They don’t have to be huge trees, just plant a small tree or 2 each year and soon you’ll have beauty and health all around you.  Last summer I planted 6 trees total – 4 were over 10 ft. tall so I had to hire someone to plant them and they were expensive but 2 of them were only 3 feet tall which I bought cheaply at Home Depot and planted them myself. They’ve already grown a bit and are making me happy!

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Trees help us breathe clean air by absorbing odors and pollutants .
  • They are beautiful to look at.
  • Some provide food for us. Some provide food for wildlife.
  • Trees help combat climate change.
  • You will feel good caring for and raising the trees.

Personal Disadvantages: 

  • Well if you don’t like planting things that’ll be a disadvantage to you. You could always contribute financially to a cause that plants trees and participates in re-forestation, etc.

Compost

You can add compost to soil to improve its physical properties.

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Reduces methane emissions.
  • Reduces/eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Promotes higher yields of crops.
  • Captures and destroys  industrial volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in air.
  • Improves soil and water quality.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • It takes a bit of time to learn how to compost.
  • The odor is not always pleasant so don’t put the compost pile too close to the house!

Grow Your Own Food/Buy Locally Grown

You don’t have to have a big space to do this. You can actually grow some veggies in containers! Some flowers are also edible. Once you have a taste of a home-grown tomato you will be spoiled for life and will be unable to choke down those cardboard tasting things they sell in markets. Start with something easy like strawberries or snap peas. Yum!

  • As I said, “Yum!”
  • Buying local supports smaller businesses and reduces toxic emissions from transport.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • I don’t see any.

When I go for a leisurely walk, I carry a plastic glove and small bag to clean up the area I walk through.

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • It’s good exercise!
  • You’ll feel good about contributing.
  • Your children and grandchildren will enjoy a cleaner world.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • I don’t see any.

I do have so much more to say about this topic that is dear to my heart as I’m a Taurus and a total Earth Girl but I’m anxious now to get outside on this gorgeous day to kiss the earth in so many ways. Blessings.
