Holidays Are Not All They’re Cracked Up To Be! Here’s How To Deal.

Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal.

Good for you if you enjoy the Winter Holidays! It seems however, that you are in the minority. Between trying to please everyone with foods, gifts, your presence at their house and not the in-laws, travel and having to pretend to be having the best time, it’s exhausting! Not to mention being exposed to family dynamics that can get you down, throw you off and all that. We can meet up and celebrate life with family and friends anytime of the year so why do we have to squeeze it all into one day, week, month? Traditions. Blah. Break them and create your own that will make you happy instead of sad and/or stressed. Here are some ideas to stay true to yourself during this busy season (and the whole year through too):

Avoid Stress Triggers

You must know what these triggers are before you can learn to avoid them. When trying to identify what puts you over the edge it is helpful to make a list of these things, people and situations that trigger your stress/anxiety, sadness. Even if you only know 1 or 2, write them down and then plan your holiday time so that you don’t have to encounter them or at least minimize your exposure.

Don’t Schedule/Plan Too Much

Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Don't Over Schedule, Reiki of Greater Boston

If you are hosting the holiday event you of course must plan and schedule but consider trimming it all down. I come from an Italian background so everything is all about food, all the time. Over the years I’ve come to realize that 3 pasta dishes will suffice, no need to knock myself out making 5. Think up at least a few ways that you can minimize your planning and scheduling. Accepting invitations to only a couple of parties instead of all 10 you were invited to is one thought. Come up with a few more!

SLEEP!

Consistently getting a full night’s sleep (8 hours) is essential when trying to deal with Holiday stress. Any stress really. Read here for tips for better sleep. Until your nighttime sleeping is deep and full try to sneak a nap in here and there. There’s no shame in it! Really! I love my naps.

Try Aromatherapy

Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Aromatherapy, Reiki of Greater Boston

Citrus fragrances boost levels of mood-balancing hormones, strengthen immunity, purify air quality. Purchase some essential oils like Orange, Grapefruit or Lemon. Use them in a diffuser or put a few drops on a cotton ball and inhale anytime you need a pick-me-up.

Limit Your Use Of Electronic Devices

Switch phone off as much as you can and don’t carry it with you unless you are waiting for an urgent call. Only check emails and texts once or twice a day at a specific time and watch/listen to limited TV/News. All the negative reports effect you more than you can imagine not to mention all the negative Electromagnetic radiation you’re absorbing from these devices.

Welcome Nature Into Your Life Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Invite Nature In, Reiki of Greater Boston

The one thing I do enjoy about Christmas is the fragrance that the live Balsam emits through the house. (Of course you must plant a tree/trees in its place!) Any form of nature brings healing and grounded energy to you so as much as is possible, get outside and breathe the fresh air or bring elements of nature indoors in the form of plants, flowers, feathers, acorns, pinecones, leaves, etc. If the weather isn’t too abominable on Christmas Day, I’m in favor of taking a walk either alone or with whoever wants to join (as long as they don’t chatter the whole time!) after dinner and before dessert.

Avoid Crowded Malls/Shopping Centers

Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Avoid Shopping Malls, REiki of greater Boston

Unless you shop very early, before the mad rush starts I recommend shopping on-line. No lines, no parking problems, no crowds, no scurrying about  only to find the items you want are not stocked. Shopping is such a soul crushing activity anyway and the poor air quality and constant sensory stimulation will wear you out in a snap!

Enjoy Music Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Enjoy Music, Reiki of Greater Boston

It doesn’t have to be Holiday Music. Play any music that makes you feel good and happy. I enjoy a few traditional holiday tunes but the same tunes over and over is no good. Change it up with some Jazz versions , Trans-Siberian Orchestra , The Messiah or if none of this does the trick just enjoy whatever music you like.

Help Those Less Fortunate

Volunteering may seem counterintuitive because you have to schedule yet another thing to do but the feeling you will get from helping others will far exceed the troubles. This always helps to remind me of the true meaning of the Holidays and also just how lucky I am. You can do this alone or enlist a friend to go with you. Help others and help yourself at the same time by affirming your own blessings, which by the way, will elevate the more you put yourself out there and open your heart!  You could also consider foregoing gifts for the family and instead donate that money to a favorite or worthy charity. Read: Other Ways To Give.

Breathe

Take 5 minutes a day (the same time of day is best to form a habit) to breathe consciously. Sit or lie down in a comfortable quiet area and simply follow your natural breathing pattern, watching your breath come in and out. To shake it up try different breathing patterns like Square Breathing, or Counting Your Breaths, etc. Schedule a private session -(8th option down) to learn Breath Meditation techniques. Notice how calm you feel after this brief session.

Plan An Intimate Date

Instead of attending crowded functions, schedule a luncheon with one or 2 close friends in a quiet spot perfect for sharing and catching up.

Exercise  Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Exercise, REiki of Greater Boston

As you know by now exercise reduces stress (and weight!) so do it daily during this busy season. You don’t have to hit the gym everyday but move your body in some way. Walk, dance, do some yoga or stretching. Ahhh… much better.

Manage Food Intake

Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Manage Food Intake, Reiki of Greater Boston

Oh this can be a tough one! For me though, the stress of having to take the weight off after I gorge myself is worse than saying no to Canollis and Pumpkin Pie. Some things that help me to stay on track: Eat Mindfully. This means slowly and with awareness. Pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth, how it tastes, smells and feels. Drink lots of water throughout the day, especially right before your meals. Bring your own food! I know it seems rude but I don’t really care and neither should you or your friends if they respect your intentions for your health. Baggies full of veggies and fruits and nuts, water bottles and protein bars are easy, unintrusive snacks. Allow Yourself 1 Cheat Food Per Gathering (unless you have excessive gatherings!). Be reasonable and strike a balance.

Treat Yourself

My favorite suggestion to follow! Do something that makes you feel good. (Yes, it can be sex!) Things like Spa Treatments: facials, massages, Reiki Healing and bubble baths come to mind. Others may enjoy painting, reading or dancing. There are certainly ways to treat yourself that are within your budget. This will keep you less Grinch-like through what can be a difficult season.  Holidays Are Not All They're Cracked Up To Be! Here's How To Deal., Treat Yourself, Reiki of Greater Boston

So try a few of these suggestions and I’m sure I’ll see you all Healthy and Calm on the Other Side of The Holidays! Read: More Ways to Put Some Chill Time Into Your Life.

5 Simple Ideas To Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day with Reiki of Greater Boston

Earth Day with Reiki of Greater Boston

To celebrate Earth Day and spring, the time of year we see the earth come to life, try one of these simple celebrations.

                     1. BUILD STONE CAIRNS

  • This can be a very meditative, healing and spiritual activity. There are lots of books and kits to help you build these prayer towers but I like to wing it.
  • I make choosing the stones part of the prayer. First find a place that feels ‘right’ to you. You can clear it and bless it, or not.
  • Begin your search for stones that speak to you. You can find them around your Cairn site or on your travels and then bring them back to your building site.
  • You can wash your stones or not and then start placing them however they look good to you.
  • Basically, through the whole process, do what feels right. Use your own creativity and intuition. You can make it as simple (just stack the stones) or complex (sing, dance, pray) as you like. Try it! It’s fun and soothing. Do you remember Silly Sand? For some reason this activity reminds me of this childhood toy.

2. HUG TREES

Trees facilitate the cleansing and revitalizing of all of the stored up negativity and stress we experience and give it a place to be absorbed. See the Book Corner Books below to learn about the magic of trees.

3. TRY A BAREFOOT WALKING MEDITATION

  • Spring is here! It’s time to take your shoes off and set your toes free!
  • Once your shoes are off, find a natural surface like grass, sand or woodland.
  • Before walking, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths relaxing all muscles and feeling the air against your skin. On your exhale imagine that all of your stress, illnesses and anything else that is not serving you is exiting your body through openings in the soles of your feet – exiting down deep into the earth and being absorbed and transmuted by mother earth.
  • Now begin taking steps as slowly as you can and continue on each exhale to release into the earth through your feet, keeping your mind’s focus on that process.
  • Once you are comfortable with that you can try moving the energy the other way: absorb the earth’s healing energies through the soles of your feet on each inhale while continuing to walk as slowly as you can.
  • Play around with these 2 processes as often as you can and you will feel the health benefits! See the book Corner Books below to learn about the earth’s healing powers.

4. PICK UP TRASH

Yes, even if you did not do the littering! It’s humanity’s folly, it’s our earth’s burden. We can help lift that burden with small actions daily.

5.  CREATE YOUR OWN PRAYER OF THANKS OR INTENTION

Recite it daily when you rise from bed and/or when you find yourself alone in nature.  Here is an example of one I created and use:

Book Corner

This book discusses the earth’s natural healing energy and how we can reconnect to it and use it to relieve and eliminate common modern day illnesses such as inflammation, autoimmune issues, stress, insomnia, etc. It’s easy!

Christmas Means Love

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, you likely believe in some higher power. Yes?  The essence of all higher power is Love and Love is the meaning of Christmas to me so that is why I say to all of you, Merry Christmas!  Exude Love today and everyday.

Christmas in Bethlehem. The ancient dream: a cold, clear night made brilliant by a glorious star, the smell of incense, shepherds and wise men falling to their knees in adoration of the sweet baby, the incarnation of perfect love.” –Lucinda Franks

Banish Holiday Stress In A Snap!

Holiday Stress Meter, Combat Stress at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Holiday Stress Meter, Combat Stress at Reiki of Greater Boston, WalthamIs Holiday stress creeping up on you? If so, know that you are not alone! Do you know what it is about the holiday season that makes you crazy? It might be helpful to identify the specific cause(s) because then you can more accurately target your nemesis. Is it the incessant playing of the same 10 Christmas Songs over and over beginning on Thanksgiving?  Is it the commercialization of what initially was a sacred day? Buy this, buy that and garish red and green decorations everywhere you look? Spoiled children and unaware adults thinking it’s all about receiving and therein missing the whole heart of  the holiday? Is it the fear that you will have no one to spend the holiday with or the antitheses of that, that you will be spending the holiday with too many people? Perhaps family, friends that you don’t have much in common with and/or who push your buttons? Worried about not having enough money to buy ‘good’ gifts? Argh & blah.

Take control I say. Here’s how.

#1.  Just Say No

Say no to stress at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Say ‘no’ to invitations you are not thrilled to accept. Yes, people will be pissed and think you are weird but it is your sanity at stake so it’s worth disappointing people. If you feel really badly about denying them your presence you can send a gift basket of some sort wishing them a glorious time at their party, etc.

Combat Holiday Stress with a Treat at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham#2.  Plan a Special Treat

Whether you’ll be spending the holiday alone or with others, make sure to have at least one thing planned for that day that you will look forward to. A massage? A sweet desert? A meeting with a friend? A bubble bath?

#3.  Take One Hour a Day

Combat Holiday Stress with Me Time at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Book some ‘me time’ each and every day during this stressful month. You must actually put it into your calendar and let nothing derail you from taking it. Plan to spend it doing something that brings you joy and/or calm. Some ideas: read, cook, draw/paint, make music, learn something new: a language, an instrument, woodworking, etc., walk, workout, see a movie. I could go on and on because the list is limited only by your imagination. Just one hour a day. Do it!

#4.  Be in Silence

Combat Holiday Stress with Silence at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

I have in mind you sitting in meditation, chanting and reaching nirvana but I know that is a pipe dream.  My earthy, practical nature tells me something a bit less spiritual will have to do. Here it is: Turn off the TV, the phone, the radio, the computer! I know it is scary but it is amazing how healing this is. Try it for a couple of hours when you get home from work and see how it feels. Do this for at least a couple of days for the effects to kick in. Give your body & mind a break from constant bombardment of ‘noise’ most of which is negative.

#5.  Move

Combat Holiday Stress with Movement at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Not from your home. Move your body! Ideally work yourself up to the point of sweating to release toxins caused by stress. If you belong to a gym schedule at least one day/week to take a class or work out for an hour. If you don’t belong to a gym then take a walk, a bike ride, snow shoe, do an exercise class on your TV/computer. I like Cody. They offer paid programs but also some free classes too. Here’s their free schedule for this month.

Try 1 or all 5 of these stress busters and poof you’ll be good as new! For those wanting more ideas for calm you will find some here and for those of you living near me you can also grab a Reiki Session and/or attend our Sound Healing Meditation with Tibetan Bowls. And no matter what you’re doing, always breathe in deeply and exhale completely. Ahhh. Just doing that made me relax. Try it!

We Are All Warriors

We are all Warriors we just have different fields of battle and different ‘enemies’. My personal fights are not nearly as selfless as those of our Veterans and I am most grateful for their service. I am not comparing the plights of the ordinary citizen to those of the Military. I am merely saying we are all battling something and we can learn to cope more valiantly by practicing Yoga. It’s true! Check it out.

Warrior Yoga at Reiki of Greater Boston

Warrior Yoga

In yoga, all postures can develop qualities of the warrior; the Physical Warrior: Physical Strength, Endurance, Honor, Courage, Discipline, And the Spiritual Warrior: Release, Open-heartedness, Balance, Unconditional Love, Peace.

There are a series of poses specifically called ‘Warrior’ or Virabhadrasana and offer all manner of variations. The 3 basic Warrior poses are shown above.

In Indian lore Virabhadra was a fierce warrior who had a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet, wielding a thousand clubs! Yikes! I’m scared.

Warrior Yoga at Reiki of Greater Boston, Waltham

Warrior Poses are not meant to promote violence but to bring strength and power into our bodies, minds and lives and to help us learn to battle ignorance and ego.

Here are some gems you might glean from these poses:

  • Mindfulness/Awareness
  • Increase of the body-mind connection
  • Space perception
  • Finding ease within effort
  • Release unneeded tensions in body/mind/life
  • Stay present and focused during challenges
  • Openness of the heart
  • Courage
  • Endurance
  • Finding peace in even uncomfortable moments
  • Resist Boredom through refocus and breath
  • Balance and stability
  • Resist desire to escape
  • Learn to stay still, to not give up or quit
  • Freedom

If any of these qualities are appealing to you come try a Yoga Class for Free. See you on the mat!

Walk Softly On The Earth

let-us-walk-softly-on-the-earth-with-all-living-beings-great-and-small-remembering-as-we-go-that-one-god-kind-and-wise-orated-all

Tomorrow, April 22, is Earth Day, the perfect day to think about how we can walk softly on the earth.

Here are some of my favorites:

Recycle   Cloud-1-Earth-Day

Most of us recycle now, 46 years after the initiation of this holiday. It is slow going but it’s progress. I am pretty good about doing this but I could improve. Cans, bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard-done. This year I will recycle more of my personal care product containers. How ’bout you?

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Cleaner, more beautiful, sustainable world for you and future generations.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • Use of a few extra minutes/day week to sort/organize/dispose of.

Choose Personal Care Products Wisely

Use organic and all natural. Here are some brands to check out:

Acure, Nude, Suki, One Love Organics, Weleda, Dr. Hauschka

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • A healthier, cleaner body inside and out for you and your family.
  • Less allergies.
  • Less illnesses.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • A slight pinch in your pocketbook.

Buy/Eat Organic

organic 10 percent

 Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • You and your world will be cleaner and healthier.
  • Organic farming keeps toxic, persistent pesticides out of our environment and bodies.
  • Organic farm fields absorb carbon dioxide.
  • Organic companies conduct business in a sustainable manner aiming at minimizing energy/packaging.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • A slight pinch in your pocketbook.

Garden/Landscaping

Plant Trees!

They don’t have to be huge trees, just plant a small tree or 2 each year and soon you’ll have beauty and health all around you.  Last summer I planted 6 trees total – 4 were over 10 ft. tall so I had to hire someone to plant them and they were expensive but 2 of them were only 3 feet tall which I bought cheaply at Home Depot and planted them myself. They’ve already grown a bit and are making me happy!

Angel Oak. Click on Image to see more beautiful trees!
Angel Oak. Click on Image to see more beautiful trees!

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Trees help us breathe clean air by absorbing odors and pollutants .
  • They are beautiful to look at.
  • Some provide food for us. Some provide food for wildlife.
  • Trees help combat climate change.
  • You will feel good caring for and raising the trees.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • Well if you don’t like planting things that’ll be a disadvantage to you. You could always contribute financially to a cause that plants trees and participates in re-forestation, etc.

Compost

You can add compost to soil to improve its physical properties.

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • Reduces methane emissions.
  • Reduces/eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Promotes higher yields of crops.
  • Captures and destroys  industrial volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in air.
  • Improves soil and water quality.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • It takes a bit of time to learn how to compost.
  • The odor is not always pleasant so don’t put the compost pile too close to the house!

Grow Your Own Food/Buy Locally Grown

You don’t have to have a big space to do this. You can actually grow some veggies in containers! Some flowers are also edible. Once you have a taste of a home-grown tomato you will be spoiled for life and will be unable to choke down those cardboard tasting things they sell in markets. Start with something easy like strawberries or snap peas. Yum!

strawberries

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • As I said, “Yum!”
  • Buying local supports smaller businesses and reduces toxic emissions from transport.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • I don’t see any.

Don’t Litter/Pick Up Litter

Indian Crying
This is the commercial that first made me aware that people were treating the earth poorly. Click image to watch the original 1971 commercial. “People Start Pollution. People Can Stop It.”

When I go for a leisurely walk, I carry a plastic glove and small bag to clean up the area I walk through.

Personal/Earth Benefits:

  • It’s good exercise!
  • You’ll feel good about contributing.
  • Your children and grandchildren will enjoy a cleaner world.

Personal Disadvantages:

  • I don’t see any.

I do have so much more to say about this topic that is dear to my heart as I’m a Taurus and a total Earth Girl but I’m anxious now to get outside on this gorgeous day to kiss the earth in so many ways. Blessings.
