Fun With The Full Moon!

full moon ceremony

Growing up I paid no mind to the moon. I did not feel its pull or calling. I think I was too busy being in love with the sun (needed that tan you know!) which makes sense since it represents ego and the material world. Fast forward many (unnumbered) years and now I am in love with the moon too!

I know there is some scientific explanation for the full moon phase and its position in the solar system but I don’t really give a care about that. To me the Full Moon is a time of amplification of feelings and sensuality, a time to find and express your true essence. To wit it is the perfect time for following your bliss!

Charge Crystals

full moon crystal cleanse

If you use Crystals (and I highly recommend that you do!) then this is a perfect time to cleanse and refresh them through the natural lunar energy. Simply put them either on a window sill receiving the moon’s light or even better place them outside in direct rays overnight. Be sure to collect them in the morning before the sun gets too powerful because the sun’s rays will sap the life out of them.

Cleanse Yourself and Your Space

cleanse your space, sage, incense, full moon

Declutter your physical space by ridding yourself of junk and/or things you haven’t worn or used in 6 months or more. Donate these items to a charity for added benefit. Declutter your energetic space by burning some incense or sage in your home, workspace, car, etc., take an epsom salt bath, ring some bells/chimes in your spaces and absorb the sound. Consider also completing a food fast and or doing a detox for the day or week of the full moon.

Meditate

If you’re new to meditation see this. Choose one type of meditation and bring it outside under the full moon. You can simply inhale the moon’s energy and let it warm you and open your heart and as you exhale connect yourself further to the earth. If it’s warm where you are, sitting on the ground is ideal or if you’re doing walking meditation walk barefoot!  If it’s wintery weather maybe sit inside at a window with moon light streaming in or do a more active meditation outside like Breath of Joy.

Dance

Dance to your choice of music (Classic Moon Tunes:  Cat Steven’s Moon Shadow or Neil Young’s Harvest Moon or Van Morrison’s Dancing in the Moonlight, Bad Moon Rising by CCR) Whatever moves you will do. Consider also dancing to night’s nature sounds: the crackle of leaves and branches , the hoot of owls, howl of coyotes or even silence. Move freely, let go and be wild! Another option if it’s warm is to dance naked. There’s really nothing more free feeling than this! Finally ‘dancing’ with a friend amorously under the full moon is exquisite.

Let Go

full moon, howling, letting go

Forgive yourself and forgive others. Write down on a paper something you feel guilty for or some anger or grudge you hold. Hold those feelings for a moment and ask the moon to help you release and let go these feelings/situations that are not serving you. Burn the paper in a fire and as you watch it burn say goodbye to these unhelpful feelings. Let them transmute into ash. One other thing I like to do after this is to Howl at the Moon! Try it! When I do my howling I am thanking the moon and other forces for assisting me in moving forward and/or I am releasing more of the feelings I just burned.

Send Some Love Reiki of greater boston, waltham reiki, life coaching

The Full Moon phase is a perfect time to pray for others and send them good wishes and vibrations. Metta Meditation (Loving Kindness) is my go to for this but you can do your own method of Love sending. Metta:  Start by sending the Love to yourself first –

May I dwell in safety.
May I be happy and healthy.
May I be at peace.

Move on then to someone you love and send this prayer to them using their name – May “name” dwell in safety, etc. Next send it to someone who pushes your buttons! And finally send the prayer to all human beings or all sentient beings whichever seems right for you.

Intentionally Absorb the Lunar Energy

Simply sit directly under the moon and absorb whatever it is sending you. It is helpful to be in a calm state to absorb this energy so perhaps take a few deep breaths or a few minutes watching your breath and then communicate with Mother Moon in whatever way that feels right for you. Stay open!

Make a Wish or Set Intentions

full moon intentions

Write your wish or intention on a piece of paper and put it in a small wish jar. I like to use clear glass. Set the jar out in the moonlight and let the moon do its magic. Take the jar in in the morning and put it away until the next full moon when you can revisit your original wish/intention and note any progress. Re-do it if necessary.

Take a Moon Bath

full moon bathing

You can just bathe in the moon rays either clothed or naked or actually take a bath with water and moon rays. For this you can use a sprinkler, hose or my favorite – a kiddie pool! So fun and purifying. Get clean!

Invent Your Own Full Moon Ceremony

full moon ceremony

Get creative! Listen to your gut and go with it. Each time I do my own ceremony I add something new as the spirit moves me. Think about banging a drum or other percussion instrument, dance, yell, use fire, do yoga, sleep outside, etc.

Pick one or 2 of these activities that call to you, give them a try and let me know how you make out. Most important is to feel creative and FREE!

Reiki Healing For Autoimmune Issues*

Healing Autoimmune with natural methods: reiki, yoga, meditation

20% of the American population suffer from 1 or more autoimmune diseases according to the AARD! There are more than 100 identified AutoImmune Disorders. Here are some of the most common and well known:

  • Addison’s
  • Lupus
  • Lyme
  • Celiac
  • Crohn’s
  • Psoriasis
  • Endometriosis
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Grave’s
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia

More than half of my clients are suffering from some form of Autoimmune issue. I personally began Reiki Healing Treatments for symptoms presenting as Lyme, Lupus, MS, Fibromyalgia! With a steady diet of Reiki, Yoga and multiple supplements along with clean eating, these symptoms went into remission. These Alternative Treatments saved my life when Western Medicine failed to give relief*.  If I go off my regimen for too long AI symptoms reappear so I know this combination of Healing works for my Autoimmune problems.  Reiki will help you with your Autoimmune Diseases but you may need to change other things about your lifestyle, add other alternative healing and certainly, most certainly, you’ll need to have consistent Reiki Healing to put your body back in balance. One session will not do the trick for any chronic issue. Sorry! Just the hard, cold truth according to my experiences as a person who has suffered with chronic illness and also as a Healer treating clients suffering the same.

Causes of Autoimmune Disease

The causes of Autoimmune are still being theorized upon. I can say without doubt that emotional stress was a major contributor to my own issues. Most experts agree that once you have suffered some form of Autoimmune, triggers that exacerbate conditions usually include Stress, Allergens, Pesticides, Metal Poisoning, Hormonal Imbalance, Depression and Trauma. I’d say it’s a good idea then whether you have an AI or not to steer clear of these as much as possible. Consider these methods:

StressRecognize precursors to stress and before you get into full blown panic mode or flight/fight mode remove yourself from the stressor(s) (a particular person that never fails to push your buttons perhaps?!) and/or use some calming techniques so that you can deal more reasonably with the situations. Some calming techniques that work for a majority of people: meditation, yoga, grounding crystals, Reiki Healing, Massage Session, Weighted Blankets, Walk in Nature, Listen to Music.

AllergensLearn what these are for you and stay away! Common food allergens are: nuts, corn, gluten, dairy. Gut health is essential in manning inflammation and warding off AI flair ups. Adding Probiotics and a dietary cleanse to your regimen may help.

Pesticides – Avoid Round Up, any non-organic fertilizers, insecticides, etc.

Metal PoisoningAvoid mercury from certain fish sources, and amalgam dental fillings, arsenic and others from contaminated water, cigarettes and beauty products. You can have a metal detection test done but it can’t hurt to start an over the counter metal detox program.

Hormone Imbalance Have your hormones tested. It requires a simple blood draw. Consider seeing a bio-identical hormone specialist.

Depression – Causes of depression are varied. If you suffer with this for too long with out relief your immune system will certainly be effected. So many people deal with depression as a chronic illness and are reluctant to medicate but sometimes that is what’s needed. Certainly see a therapist to discuss options. Reiki, yoga and Crystal Healing can elevate your mood.

Trauma – Most trauma we do not have control over. What we can control though is how we deal with trauma. Make sure you get all the support possible in whatever form helps you.

Healing Autoimmune with natural methods: reiki, yoga, meditation

Here are some of the ways that Reiki Healing* will address your Autoimmune Disorders:

Reduces Pain

Physical pain of some sort is prevalent in most autoimmune diseases. Most patients who have undergone Reiki treatments report feeling less pain as a result.

Balances and Grounds Your Energy

Reiki balances and aligns your energy making you feel more whole. The Reiki Energy will also ground you so that you can think clearly and act steadily. This sense of balance and steadiness makes it easier for people to deal with their illness, and allows a more improved outlook on their lives.

Reduces Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression are common problems among people with autoimmune diseases and only serve to  worsen the patient’s symptoms. Research studies have shown that regular Reiki sessions reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

Ignites Parasympathetic Nervous System

Reiki Healing stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). The priority for PNS is to rest, restore, recover and heal. Innately we know how to heal but the busy modern world keeps us from this knowledge while it keeps us in the flight or fight mode which wears down our immune system. Reiki reminds the body how to heal itself!

So if you’re suffering with any Autoimmune Disorder and/or are having a flair up that is not responding to regular treatments you might consider giving Reiki Healing a try. Schedule your Volume Discount (3 Sessions) here (9th option down). Hope to see you soon!

*Disclaimer: Reiki is intended to be used as a complement to traditional medical care or as a personal relaxation and stress-reducing tool. It is not a substitute for medical/psychological diagnoses or treatment. Always check with your physician before using any alternative healing.

A Spirit of Forgiveness. Forgive Yourself, Forgive Others

There are myriad benefits of Forgiveness for both sides of the act. Things like lower heart rate, lower stress and anxiety, less depression, lower blood pressure, increased friendships, increased spiritual well-being, etc. have been shown to result from forgiveness.

On the other hand, lack of ability to forgive self and others eventually leads to depression, anxiety, fear, shame, anger and all kinds of other mental and emotional unrest.

In light of the recently publicized suicides by well-known, seemingly well respected and high functioning celebrities I wonder what part non-forgiveness played in their desperate state. Forgiving ourselves is often more difficult than forgiving others and then we’ve got to live with that guilt every day if we can’t reconcile it. It can certainly wear on us day after day, year after year.

Spiritual practices help us to forgive and I do practice daily but forgiveness is a tough nut to crack for me related to both myself and to some family members. Along comes Turkey Totem! (Read more about Totem Animals here.)

TURKEY: A SPIRIT OF FORGIVENESS

Turkeys, turkeys they’re everywhere! All of a sudden these dinosaur looking birds seem to be all around me. Everywhere I go I see one or a group or I come across a Turkey feather like this one:

My cat plays with 2 Turkeys every day. They follow each other around the yard and just hang together!

I take their overabundant presence in my life as a sign. I then begin searching for the meaning of this sign. In my research, I kept reading that Turkey symbolizes:

  • Abundance
  • Connection with the spirit of the land, with Mother Earth
  • Blessings from the Earth
  • Forms of nourishment in our life
  • Harvesting the fruits of your efforts and your work
  • Importance of community
  • Generosity, sharing
  • Having enough in our life, satisfaction

Very nice. I love all of this but it did not prompt me to do anything or have an enlightened moment. Then I received an email from my Shamanic Society (CSEE) containing an article about Turkeys! In brief it said,

Turkey suggests that clearing ancestral patterns through forgiveness practice would help to ease triggers. Currently, there are lifetimes of very old, ancestral patterns surfacing with a lot of pain highlighted through the genetic code. You inherited your ancestors’ beliefs in fear, separation and suffering via your genes and through the imprinting of your culture. Your wounded ancestors are dramatically calling out, through the body, for help in getting unstuck.’

Bam!  Majorly resonant for me. So, I’m off working with Turkey Medicine and am feeling more ease around these issues as well as things I’ve done in the past that I am not proud of.

If you feel you might benefit from the heart softening, forgiveness inducing spirit of Turkey give this 10:00 minute meditation a try. I love it! It at first may sound odd but stick with it and eventually it will feel like a lullaby and a blessing. I would recommend experiencing it several times (maybe once a day for 5 days). I hope you enjoy and come to peace within yourself and toward others who may have wronged you. Gobble, gobble! Thank you kind Turkey for coming into my life.

Me? Meditate? I Don’t Think so!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston, waltham

Most people come into my office for services because they are feeling ‘off’ in some way and know they can be better. A majority are stressed and anxious, have trouble sleeping, etc. but when I ask them if they’ve tried meditation this is how they look at me!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston, waltham
Me? Meditate? I Don’t Think So!

Meditation gets a bad rap in some circles with people believing that sitting still in lotus pose like a Buddha is a requirement. I used to think that too and being a fairly active person with a penchant for large muscle movement, this pose did not appeal to me either but this notion is quite far from the truth. There are many different and fun ways to meditate and still reap the benefits!

Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham

Some of The Benefits of Meditation

  • Increases immune function
  • Decreases Pain
  • Decreases Inflammation at the Cellular Level
  • Increases HappinessDecreases Depression
  • Decreases Anxiety
  • Decreases Stress
  • Increases your sense of connection to others
  • Increases compassion
  • Decreases feelings of loneliness
  • Increases ability to control emotions
  • Increases grey matter (memory) and cortical thickness (attention span)
  • Improves productivity and creativity
  • Improves ability to sleep
  • Decreases need for sleep
  • Improves perspective
  • Improves ability to express your authentic self
  • Decreases drama in your life

Despite all these life improving benefits, people come up with excuses,  fears and reasons not to participate in meditation.

Some Common Reasons People Give for Why They ‘Can’t’ Meditate

  1. I can’t sit still
  2. I can’t clear my mindMeditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
  3. I don’t have time
  4. I don’t have a quiet place
  5. Quiet makes me anxious
  6. It’s boring

Addressing each of the above:

  1. There is no need to sit still to meditate. There are many meditation methods that involve movement/activity. Try Walking Meditation, Vinyasa (Flow)Yoga, Tea Ceremony Meditation, Chanting.
  2. Even master meditators have trouble clearing their minds sometimes. Having a clear mind is not a requirement for meditation. In fact I welcome the distracting thoughts because they give me an opportunity to practice placing my focus back on what I’m doing. Meditational focal points could be the breath, a mantra, a candle flame, etc. This is the practice – noticing the unclear mind and bringing your focus back to attention, over and over. Meditation is practice not perfection. (The practice of meditation is perfection though!)
  3. No time? Nonsense!

    Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
    NO Time? Nonsense!
  4. You don’t have to meditate for long periods to reap the rewards. To beginners I recommend 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night. 10 minutes a day. I know you have that available to you and if you cannot make that time for your sanity and improved quality of life then you are not quite ready to progress in this area of your life. At this time, there is something about being unsettled/unhealthy that is more compelling to you than grounded living. This is ok! We are all at different places in our journeys.  Clients who give the reason of no time for meditation seem to find meditating while lying down in bed just before sleep at night and/or before they get up in the morning an easy way to ease into it all.You may not be able to get a quiet place to meditate at home because you live with noisy people or people who demand your attention. Look elsewhere. Perhaps there is a place outside somewhere, in a park or your backyard that will offer more peace for you. Maybe at work there is a place you can go to at lunch break – an empty office? Eventually you will not need pure quiet to meditate. Being able to achieve calm among the noise is the ultimate goal so practicing with a bit of a ruckus can be beneficial.Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston waltham
  5. Uncomfortable with quiet? See #4.
  6. With so many meditation methods there is bound to be at least one that will pique and keep your interest!

I believe beneath these excuses is a fear of discovering deep truths. This fear is usually not conscious. It can be scary looking in the mirror of your mind but it is the only way to move beyond the crap on a more permanent basis.

Consistency is key. I find 5 minutes a day better than 30 minutes once a week. You may not notice the benefit immediately (but you may!), either way, if you continue, you will  notice how strong, grounded, calm, level-headed, compassionate, etc. you’ve become and you will need to go buy and wear a shirt that says, ‘SPIRITUAL WARRIOR!’

There are too many types of meditation to list here but here are:

Some of the More Popular Meditation Methods

  • Walking– Just walk and pay attention. Walk slow, walk fast, feel your feet. Notice.
  • Metta Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamMetta (Loving Kindness)-I love this one because I get to send myself some love first! Use loving statements starting with yourself as recipient. 1. May I be/feel: “fill in the blank”: happy, loved, peaceful, etc. 2. Next think of some one you like or are thankful for use the same statement with them in mind: May they be “fill in the blank”. 3. Someone you feel neutral about. 4. Someone who pushes your buttons, disturbs your peace. 5. All beings/The Universe/The Earth.
  • Mantra– You can use traditional Mantras like ‘Sat Nam’ or I am Truth. I like “I am Light’ and here’s a beautiful song about that for you to enjoy and absorb. You can also make up your own Mantra that means something to you like: My heart is open and free or I am One with All.
  • Sound-Do this lying down or seated. Allow all sounds to enter your awareness and let them be.
  • Guided/Visualization-Use a meditation app like Head Space or Insight Timer. Candle Flame Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamCandle Flame– Soften your gaze and focus on a candle flame. You may receive messages or see images as time passes. Bring your focus back to the flame over and over again as you notice your mind wandering.
  • Mindfulness-In short, become aware of each movement, sound, thought, etc. Watch all as the observer.
  • Chanting- Chant along with some traditional sanskrit prayers. Here’s an example. It’s ok if you mess up the words just feel it all and open your throat.
  • Breathwork-Simply watch your breath come in and out (without losing focus on the breath). It’s harder than it sounds. You can also find a breathing pattern that feels good to you. Square breathing, for example, is a basic breathing technique that is not too difficult to work with.
  • Journaling-Write anything! Your dreams, your thoughts, ideas, disturbances, things that you’re grateful for, goals, feelings. Have fun! Always have fun.Meditation at reikiofgreaterboston walthamEngaging in an activity that absorbs you: working on a puzzle, a math problem, dancing, singing any art form or creative practice. Merge and become one with the activity.

C’mon now! Pick one and just give it a try for me. For yourself! If you’d like a little bit of guidance book a private session with me (it’s the 8th option down on that link) and you’ll be on your way in no time.

The History and Magic of Gazing Globes

Intriguing Uses for gazing globes reiki of greater boston

These Reflecting Globes are so beautiful! They’ve always intrigued me and I put a couple in my garden long before I knew their history. Finally I had time to read a little about them and thought I’d share what I learned.

History & General Information

Gazing Globes were first introduced in 13th century Venice by artisan glass blowers.

Soon after they were made popular in Germany.  King Ludwig of Bavaria so loved gazing balls that he had them made to be hung in trees and this is said to have led to the use of glass baubles as Christmas tree ornaments.

Today it is rarer to find those made of glass due to its fragile nature. Stainless steel and other metals are used more frequently but still have the reflecting surface that is so inherent to their charm.

These intriguing pieces are known by many names:

  • Butler Balls
  • Chrome Ball
  • Fairy Balls
  • Garden Globe
  • Gazing Balls
  • Globes of Happiness
  • Lawn Balls
  • Mirror Balls
  • Protective Balls
  • Witch Balls
  • Yard Globes

They come in all sizes from mini (2 inches in diameter)miniature gazing globes, reiki of greater boston to Gigantic (118’ feet in diameter), the latter namely in the Parc Villette, Paris.

Gazing Globe, reiki of greater boston, parc villete paris
Parc de la Villette, Paris

There is also a very fun globe in Millennium Park, Chicago called ‘The Bean’. This one is 33 by 66 by 42 feet. So cool.

"The Bean" gazing globe, Millenium Park Chicago, reikiofgreaterboston

Millennium Park, Chicago

Purposes

In addition to making your garden/yard look pretty these globes have had several other uses. I’ve highlighted my favorites.

  • Ward off evil
  • Bring good luck
  • Announce affluence in a home
  • Discreetly chaperone young couples during courtship. (Courtship?! Victorian Era no doubt.)
  • Alert the servant when guests might need attention such as a drink refill (Butler Ball). The reflective globe would be placed strategically on a dining room sideboard so servants could remain outside the room and still see when service was required.
  • Add color to your garden or lawn
  • Attract birds and butterflies
  • Provide a quiet spot for meditation. Some believed that staring into the ball made the gazer become one with the universe.
  • Protect the property owner from witches. The witch would see her reflection in the globe and be frightened away before casting  spell.
  • Ward off Ghosts, Disease and Evil Spirits
  •  Attract friendly spirits and faeries and bringing good fortune to the home
  • And finally they (only the steel ones) fertilize your garden naturally! Amazing. The steel in the ball attracts magnetic charges and hence has a high degree of nitrogen in the air there. This is how we fertilize. This process is called Electroculture! So go buy some Globes and get rid of your pesticides.

These Gazing Balls are different from Crystal Balls in several ways (hollow vs. solid, any color vs. clear, etc.)  but they remind me of them and I think that accounts for some of my affinity toward them. There is something mystical about them for sure. I think they would be a nice addition to a sacred space or altar too. Check them out for yourself! Let me know what you think.

Reiki Of Greater Boston Heals The Mind, Body and Spirit Through A Combination Of Healing Methods

Reiki of Greater Boston featured in Mass Realty Magazine

By Paul Rowe  (Mass Realty Magazine)

The healing work practiced at Reiki Of Greater Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts is geared towards activating the innate power in every individual that has been sidetracked, weakened, or paralyzed from exposure to the toxic forces in our world. Through the healing power of Reiki, the body is moved toward its original state of health, the mind directed towards peace and the heart guided toward its true purpose.

Reiki is a non-religious based energy healing treatment that promotes healing, stress reduction, and relaxation. Through the gentle placement of the practitioner’s hands on the client’s fully clothed body, universal healing energy called Reiki is channeled to the client. This positive energy facilitates conditions in the body that allow healing to occur.

Throughout our daily lives, we are not included on our list of priorities. Grocery shopping, working long hours, and providing for others puts us all continually out of balance, disrupting the forces inside us, causing illness, unrest, and despair. To get health back on track we must unearth the truth of our purpose: the truth of who we are. At Reiki Of Greater Boston, Reiki therapist Lisa Hassett performs energy work that assists Boston residents in exposing the lies we live that contribute to our mental and physical illnesses. For countless people, Reiki’s focus on stress reduction is the first step on the road to recovery.

Conditions like Sadness/Depression, Stress, Anger, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, and other Auto-Immune disorders are particularly responsive to this treatment in combination with traditional treatments. Luckily for folks in the Boston area, Lisa Hassett is sharing the healing power of Reiki with people suffering from these debilitating conditions.

“Most of my clients, both adults and children, do present some type of stress that is affecting their lives in some negative way such as insomnia, lack of concentration, or eating imbalance. Lately, this all seems to be magnified by the political state of our country and our fast-paced way of life, especially here in Boston and the Northeast,” Hassett said. “Reiki puts your physical and energetic body back into alignment so that you can react to external stimuli in a more balanced manner.”

However, Hassett admits that Reiki is not a “silver bullet.” Just as it takes time to enter these states of stress, it takes time and energy to escape them. Although Reiki works independently to facilitate mental and physical healing, it works best when clients choose to be active in their path to healing and participate in the conjunctive services offered by Hassett: breath work, meditation, crystal healing, and life coaching.

Hassett also provides clients with helpful homework such as books to consider reading, journaling assignments, and practicing the breathing, meditation, and yoga techniques she introduced to them. For Hassett, these techniques must simply be put into practice to experience their full benefits.

“Reiki and the other healing modalities I use are difficult to put accurately into words,” Hassett said. “Direct experience provides the best way to know how these methods will enlighten your body, mind, and spirit.”

Hassett herself has experienced firsthand the rich benefits of yoga, focused breathing, and Reiki. After suffering from a debilitating illness in the late 90s, when no Western medicine could help her, she turned to these methods. This restorative combination pulled Hassett out of death’s grip. Since then, Hassett has dedicated her life to helping her fellow Earthlings find relief from physical and emotional illness.

“Here I am,” Hassett said. “I’m so happy to help.”

Thank you to everyone who made the opening week at Reiki of Greater Boston a success! I met so many lovely new clients and students and am looking forward to working together to further enhance our health.  Based on suggestions and feedback I have changed our class times/descriptions a bit to accomodate needs.
